I wax down in my basement, and in the bright lights I can see a TON of little wax dust particles in the air whenever I scrape. So, to try and limit the amount of this stuff I was breathing in I built a downdraft table — a way to create suction along the length of the table over which I’m waxing and pull down the finer particles and push that dirty air outside.
To build something like this you need some thin plywood, some 2 x 4’s or similar material for framing, some long peg board, a squirrel-cage fan (Harbor Freight sells the one I bought for about $120), and some 4″ flexible tubing (or, if you have a better space for setup than me, some 4″ metal ducting). Also, obviously, some kind of table saw or decent saw and a drill and screws. The most important component is obviously the squirrel cage exhaust fan — these fans are built to create suction, and you should (apparently) always place them as close to the evacuation point as possible — these fans are good at “pulling” air, and not so good at “pushing” it. Anyway, here are some pictures — if you’re interested in better drawings or whatever contact me and I’ll send you something or put it up here.
